Should I Get An SSL Certificate?

Google has revealed that they are now considering whether your site is secured with SSL when ranking you on Google, to help safeguard the internet.

What does that mean for you and your website?

This means that if your website is secured with an SSL certificate this is more favourable to your search results than a site that doesn’t do this.

So what is an SSL certificate or secure website?

Have you noticed that certain websites, like your online bank, begin with “https://” and others, like this one, begin with “http://” when you visit them? The distinction is that a website denoted by a “s” transmits data to your computer in a manner that precludes other parties from intercepting it.

This requires an SSL certificate, which is hard to set up on your own if you don’t know how to do it. However, most web hosts will do this for you as a paid service.

The internet should ideally be safe from the start. While it won’t completely solve the issues, this will significantly reduce the likelihood of breaking in. It’s similar to installing security cameras or an alarm system on your home.

Should I get an SSL certificate?

SSL is optional, however we advise it if you are accepting payments or doing sales through your website. The impact on your results is probably going to be negligible right now. The last thing you want to do is take money without taking all necessary precautions to keep your customers safe!

What does this mean in the future?

Although Google is dedicated to ensuring internet security in general, they are now significantly more concerned with the quality of the content on your website. Right now, we advise you to always concentrate on quality blog entries, customer service, and content. Google could alter this in the future, but we’ll have to wait and see what they do.
